ISO/IEC 27001 Explained: Building an Information Security Management System

ISO/IEC 27001 Explained: Building an Information Security Management System

ISO/IEC 27001 is the best-known international standard for information security. It does not give you a list of tools to buy. It asks you to build an Information Security Management System (ISMS), which is a set of policies, processes and controls that you run, check and improve over time.

What an ISMS includes

An ISMS starts with understanding your organization: what information you hold, who needs it, what could go wrong and what the law and your customers expect. From there it covers:

  • Scope: which parts of the business the ISMS protects.
  • Leadership: an information security policy approved by top management, with clear roles and responsibilities.
  • Risk assessment and treatment: a method to find risks, rate them and decide how to deal with each one.
  • Statement of Applicability: a document that lists the controls you selected and why.
  • Monitoring and improvement: measuring results, internal audits and management reviews.

The controls in Annex A

The 2022 version of the standard lists 93 controls in four themes: organizational, people, physical and technological. You do not have to use all of them. You choose the controls that match your risks and explain any you leave out. Examples include access control, secure development, backup, logging and monitoring, supplier security and awareness training.

How certification works

  1. Initial assessment: map your information assets and compare your current practice with the standard.
  2. Policy development: write the policies and procedures the ISMS needs.
  3. Implementation: put the controls in place, train staff and start keeping records.
  4. Internal audit: check your own ISMS and fix findings before the external audit.
  5. Certification audit: an accredited certification body audits the ISMS in two stages.
  6. Surveillance and renewal: the body returns for periodic audits, and the certificate is renewed on a regular cycle.

Why organizations choose it

Certification gives customers and partners independent proof that you manage information security in a structured way. It also helps you meet contract and regulatory expectations, lowers the chance of costly incidents and gives your team a shared way of working. Many companies pair ISO/IEC 27001 with a SOC 2 report, because the two overlap in many controls.

Final thoughts

ISO/IEC 27001 works best when it fits how your business really runs. Keep the scope clear, keep the documents short and useful, and make sure the records show what actually happens each day.
